Frequent diarrhea? Learn how to treat it!
Understand the causes and treatments for frequent diarrhea. Learn how proper nutrition and a balanced diet can improve your quality of life and well-being!
Frequent diarrhea is a condition characterized by frequent and loose stools, often accompanied by abdominal discomfort, urgency to use the bathroom, and, in some cases, extreme fatigue. Therefore, it is important to identify whether the type of diarrhea is acute, persistent, or chronic, in order to treat it appropriately.

Thus, the differences are:

Acute diarrhea occurs for less than 14 days and is usually viral in nature;

Persistent diarrhea lasts between 14 and 28 days; and

Chronic diarrhea lasts more than 28 days. The causes are diverse, and it is important to discover them to guide treatment.

For a complete evaluation of frequent diarrhea, it is crucial to examine the functioning of the pancreas (to detect pancreatic insufficiency), the liver and thyroid, as well as the levels of vitamins/minerals, the presence of histamine intolerance, and the possibility of celiac disease.

In case of suspicion of celiac disease, even if gluten is not consumed regularly, it is recommended to consume 3g of gluten daily for a minimum period of 6 weeks to obtain accurate results in the tests. If the results are negative for celiac disease, it is necessary to consider the possibility of non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

There is also functional diarrhea, which occurs daily and without an apparent cause, often requiring continuous medication treatment. Chronic diarrhea, on the other hand, is often associated with more serious conditions, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer, which require immediate medical follow-up.

Treatments for Frequent Diarrhea

The treatment varies according to the cause of frequent diarrhea. See some examples:

Diarrhea due to irritable bowel syndrome or functional: A low-FODMAP and low-histamine diet can be very effective.

Diarrhea due to SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth): Antibiotics prescribed by the doctor, followed by a Low FODMAP diet.

Diarrhea due to lactose intolerance: Reduce or eliminate lactose from the diet, according to individual tolerance, as well as use lactase enzyme, when necessary.

Diarrhea due to bile acid: Treatment with bile acid sequestrants and a low-fat, high-soluble-fiber diet.

Diarrhea due to sucrose-isomaltase enzyme deficiency: Adopt a low-sucrose and low-amyloid diet.

Diarrhea due to celiac disease: Total exclusion of gluten-containing foods.

Frequent Diarrhea and Diet

Maintaining a balanced diet is essential in the treatment of frequent diarrhea. Avoiding irritating foods, such as fatty, spicy, or high in insoluble fiber, can relieve symptoms. Additionally, consuming foods rich in soluble fiber, such as oats, apple, and banana, can help regulate intestinal transit.

Hydration is also crucial during episodes of frequent diarrhea, to prevent dehydration. Drinking water, clear teas, and oral rehydration solutions are important strategies to maintain the balance of liquids and electrolytes in the body. Additionally, the gradual introduction of light foods, such as broths, soups, and potatoes, can assist in the recovery of the digestive system.

Conclusion

When dealing with frequent diarrhea, it is important to investigate the underlying causes and follow a holistic approach that combines diet, hydration, and medical follow-up. As a nutritionist, I recommend a personalized eating plan, adapted to your specific needs, to help restore the balance of the gastrointestinal tract and improve your quality of life.

Do not ignore the signs of your body! Frequent diarrhea can be a reflection of a more serious condition. Seeking professional and nutritional help is essential to treat the problem effectively. Remember that simple changes, such as taking care of your diet and staying hydrated, can make all the difference.
